Duke City T-Shirt: Our town was named after the Duke of Albuquerque. His real name was Don Francisco Fernández de la Cueva y Enríquez de Cabrera and he was the viceroy of New Spain from 1653 to 1660. One of de la Cueva's aristocratic titles was Duke of Alburquerque, referring to the Spanish town of Alburquerque (two "r"s) located just a few miles from the Portuguese border. In fact, Alburqerque is an old Portuguese family name. Cork trees dominate the landscape and Alburquerque is a center of the Spanish cork industry. The name is Latin (Roman) in origin and comes from the words, "alba quercus" or "white oak" (the wood of the cork oak is white after the bark has been removed).
Oh, and we used to have a minor league baseball team, the Albuquerque Dukes, but they left town...and were replaced by the Isotopes...Go 'topes! (But, we still miss the Dukes!)
